Nearly half of Americans are either diabetic or pre-diabetic, which is obviously quite an alarming, growing trend, especially among children, but… What if we told you Type 2 Diabetes isn’t a disease?
True story. Type 2 Diabetes is simply a symptom of metabolic unhealth and, in most cases, getting metabolically healthy can relieve the sufferer of said symptom.
Type 2 Diabetes is classified by the Mayo Clinic as “an impairment in the way the body regulates and uses sugar (glucose) as fuel.” They go on to say that this is a result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin. Further, they say that the treatment is to supplement the body with enough insulin to make up the difference, but that’s not the whole story. We’ve said enough about Big Pharma, the medical industry, and the lack of commitment to teaching people to be healthy in favor of the commitment to sell drugs instead, so that’s not a rabbit hole we need to go down, but we CAN tell you the WHOLE STORY.
Most people are told, when diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, that they have an issue with pancreatic production of insulin and that they need drugs. Typically these people are made aware that it’s self-inflicted due to obesity (more on that in a minute), but they still resign themselves to the idea that the drugs are the only path to suppress the symptoms. In fact, the older generations in the south call diabetes “the sugar” and many act as though it’s contagious.
“Well, he caught the sugar.”
And it is terrible... But, again, there’s more to the story.
In fact, it’s almost certainly the case. 95% of Type 2 Diabetes cases are a direct result of obesity. That’s actually great news! It means that the pancreas isn’t deficient in all reality. It produces adequate insulin for your ideal body weight. It just can’t be expected to keep up with the excess, meaning that if ideal body weight were achieved, then the body could process glucose without issue. Hmmm.
In 95% of cases, simply losing weight can wipe out the need for supplemental insulin. It also can relieve an untold number of other symptoms of metabolic unhealth, including hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, cardiovascular issues, having to buy 2 seats on an airplane, depression, self-esteem issues, bed sores, and a veritable plethora of other conditions. Somehow, instead of acknowledging that all of these things are underlying symptoms of a single cause (self-inflicted metabolic unhealth), the medical industry treats each symptom individually instead of treating the source. At The Fittest, we believe that to be unfortunate and highly unnecessary. There’s one cause: obesity. And there’s one preventive measure: don’t be obese.
Like we mentioned above, this is great news! It means you’re in control of your own destiny. You can be the hero of your own story by becoming The Fittest Version of yourself.
Getting to your ideal body weight takes work, but there may be no more fulfilling way to live than to pull the 9 lifestyle levers. Sleeping adequately is the single greatest lever when it comes to hormone optimization. Eating a nutrient-dense, nose-to-tail diet provides optimal satiety so you’ll consume a quantity of food that is ideal for you instead of overeating due to undernourishment. Getting blood-burning workouts in every day will help you build muscle and burn excess body fat. Getting in the sun allows you to produce optimal amounts of vitamin D to regulate your immune system and circadian rhythm, and aid in hormone regulation. Getting your feet on the ground every morning aids in healing so you can get more out of your workouts. Shielding from modern dangers like seed oils and EMFs can drastically reduce your susceptibility to all sorts of issues. Bonding with a tribe of like-minded individuals will encourage you to keep going when you feel like you can’t. Fighting for what you want will build resiliency against becoming obese in the future, and getting cold aids in increased basal metabolic rate, muscle-healing, and reduced inflammation. Every lifestyle lever has its role in helping you claim your birthright as a non-diabetic warrior.
